Design by humor – Ellen Pong
Ellen Pong (b. 1995, Bellevue, Washington) is a ceramicist and designer based in Queens, New York. Her sculptural furniture and art objects have been shown by galleries like Superhouse, Marta, and Objective, and featured in publications like Curbed, Metropolis, and Elle Decor. She was listed on Sight Unseen’s American Design Hot List 2021. Ellen graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in History of Art.
Ellen creates unusual ceramic pieces—including lamps, chairs, and vessels—that marry function with an irreverent sensibility. Each design is formed through a process of hand-building, sometimes for many weeks.
Her designs are marked by their humor and are on occasion creature-like—creeping, swirling, and crawling out of another dimension.
A crouching Phantom Limb chair doubles as a light, while a silver Bean Pole lamp twists toward the sky. Meanwhile, she continues to dream up new shapes and bring them forth.
“I am at a point where my practice isn’t one cohesive thing,” Pong says. “I’m still exploring many different avenues that I feel like are unfinished lines of thought …. For more details, please refer to the web link below.
